With temperatures plummeting across New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Vermont, Massachusetts and Rhode Island, homeowners are powering up their furnaces, often for the first time in quite a while.
At Mirabito Energy Products, we strongly encourage you to test your furnace in the fall to ensure that it’s operating as intended. We also recommend you put your senses to work to determine if something is off about its operations. One of the standard issues that people notice on this first furnace cycle is an odor, often a burning smell. This odor may not actually be cause for concern, though. In this article, we’ll take you through some reasons your furnace may smell peculiar the first time you run it.
The Most Common Culprit — Dust
We get that people can be worried by the smell of something burning from their heating equipment. The most common cause of these smells is dust, however. Like anything else that sits idle for months, a furnace’s burner will accumulate dust, and it can burn when your equipment’s flames click back on. Most of the time, this dust will burn off, and the odor will go away quickly.
Dirty Air Filters Can Also Cause Off-Smells
If you have central air conditioning, then your heating and cooling system’s air filter gets a workout during the summer and fall, stopping airborne pollutants from entering your home. In that time, it might have become clogged with dust, pollen, pet dander, debris and even mold. When hot air starts blowing through a dirty filter, it might come out of your vents with a funk.
We recommend you check your air filter every month during the peak heating and cooling seasons and change or clean it if it’s dirty.
Components in New Equipment Give Off Odors Sometimes
A plastic or chemical smell isn’t unusual if you’re running a new furnace for the first time. The protective coating of various components is meeting flames and extreme heat and giving off this odor. Keep running the system and open the windows to let the smell disperse. If it’s still coming from your vents after an hour or so, reach out to your installer to look at the equipment.
Is There Debris or Dirt in Your Ductwork?
Sundry objects, dirt, grit and other debris may have found their way into your ducts. If you’re able to home in on the vent where the smell is coming from, you can open it up and try locating the debris.
When Is It Time to Contact the Pros at Mirabito
If addressing these potential issues doesn’t get rid of the strange smell coming from your furnace, the problem could be more serious, like bad wiring or a mechanical issue. This type of fix requires a trained HVAC professional. The heating professionals at Mirabito Energy Products are always available to provide furnace repair work.
We also perform standard preventive maintenance, which can be critical to preventing service issues, including the problems that can lead to these strange smells. Regular maintenance also helps your heating equipment run more efficiently, saving you money throughout the year. To ensure your furnace gets annual service (and get discounts and priority scheduling if you need a repair), sign up for a Mirabito Service Membership.

Mirabito understands how important this program is for many of our customers, especially as colder weather approaches, and we want to assure you that our team is here to support you every step of the way.
What You Need to Know
The Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA), which administers the HEAP program, has advised that the program start date has been delayed until November 17, 2025 – or until further notice, due to the ongoing federal government shutdown.
While the delay stems from federal funding, New York State has declined a request to allow early deliveries with retroactive benefits. As a result, benefits cannot be applied until the official program start date.
Mirabito remains ready to deliver as soon as benefits become available and continues to advocate on behalf of our customers for faster access to this critical program.
How to Prepare
If you plan to apply for HEAP, set up an account with Mirabito before contacting your local office so that you may designate Mirabito as your preferred supplier on your HEAP application. Then, visit https://otda.ny.gov/ to find your local office and apply for benefits or emergency assistance.
As a customer of Mirabito, we will be able to schedule your delivery as soon as we are notified that the benefit is available and that you are eligible.
For immediate needs, contact your local Office of Public Assistance. Find your local Department of Social Services contact information here: https://otda.ny.gov/workingfamilies/dss.asp.

Whether you are experiencing sweltering heat during the summer months or colder temperatures in the winter, like most homeowners, you will spend more time indoors. Your home is a refuge from those temperatures, but its indoor air quality (IAQ) can be an issue for your health and comfort.
Indoor air is often two to five times more polluted than outdoor air. At times, it can be 100 times more polluted! How can you ensure you and your loved ones are breathing clean, healthy air?
In this article, we’ll discuss two common IAQ solutions — air filters and air purifiers — and determine which is the best option for your home.
Why is IAQ important?
Poor IAQ can significantly affect both your health and comfort. It can worsen allergies, aggravate respiratory conditions, and contribute to symptoms like dry, itchy skin, eye irritation and persistent coughing. Beyond health concerns, airborne pollutants can create unpleasant odors, accelerate dust buildup and cause faster deterioration of surfaces like shelving, finishes, wallpaper and artwork.
Luckily, there are several solutions to reducing the amount of dust, debris, viruses, mold, bacteria and other impurities in your home’s air.
Can your furnace or air conditioner air filter prevent bad IAQ?
It depends on the quality of the air filter you are using. Most furnace and air conditioner manufacturers don’t equip their units with any filters, so it is usually up to your heating contractor to determine what filter is installed. Most of the time, they use less expensive filters made from cotton or polyester. These filters may catch some pollutants — but they don’t get all of them.
Mirabito Energy Products sells pleated media filters with a higher Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV). Our filters will catch smaller particles and contaminants, and more of them before they enter your living space.
If you’re experiencing any of the symptoms of poor IAQ listed above, the first step you should consider is an air filter upgrade.
When should you consider a whole-home air purifier?
If you need something more intensive than a higher MERV air filter, we highly recommend a whole-home air purifier. These systems also connect directly to your home’s HVAC system and eradicate airborne pollutants that even high-quality filters may let through.
We are proud to sell and install the Lennox PureAir system, which removes 90% of germs and bacteria down to .01 micron and more than 99% of the virus that causes COVID-19. We also install UV germicidal lights that slash the concentration of airborne microorganisms in half.
Which IAQ solution is best for you? Talk to Mirabito!
If you’re concerned that your home’s air isn’t as healthy as it should be, the Mirabito IAQ team is here to help you fix that, quickly and permanently. We sell and install filters, air purifiers, germicidal lights, humidifiers and dehumidifiers across our service area, which includes:

Is this the last summer that you’ll entrust your family’s comfort to inefficient, wasteful window air conditioners? Are you ready to invest in a permanent home cooling system that can stand up to the hottest days of the year with compact, energy-efficient and whisper-quiet equipment?
Mirabito Energy Products offers a fantastic selection of cooling systems that can accommodate any size or layout of house. Even if you don’t have ductwork in your home, we can provide you with world-class A/C options.
The Problem with Adding Ductwork
Central heating (furnaces) and air conditioning systems require ductwork to distribute heated and cooled air. Many homes in New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Vermont were built without ductwork. These homes often have boilers as their primary heating equipment and use cast iron or baseboard radiation to distribute the heat. Smaller homes may even use a woodburning stove as their primary heat source. Neither of these systems use ductwork, and therefore do not allow for the addition of air conditioning.
Adding ductwork to these homes can pose a lot of problems. It can take away valuable living space, and opening up walls and ceilings can reveal issues with wiring, structural components and hazardous building materials. Add to that the cost and disruption to your daily life that can come from an extensive home renovation, and it’s little surprise that many homeowners aren’t interested in going that route.
Ductless A/C Offers a Fantastic, Renovation-Free Solution
Ductless A/C products (also called mini-splits) using heat pump technology to transfer heat from the inside of your home to the outdoor air. These systems are composed of an outdoor unit and one or several indoor air handling units, which connect via thin copper lines that pass through your walls — zero ductwork required!
The installation process for ductless A/C is way less invasive than adding ductwork for a central A/C system and generally only takes a couple of days to complete. Most installations only require drilling, minimizing the disruption to your home.
Other Benefits of Ductless A/C Systems
In addition to their relatively fast, pain-free installation process, ductless mini-splits have some other big benefits:

Get energy-efficient, target cooling for your home.Summer in the Northeast can mean a lot of great things like al fresco meals, dips in the pool and ice cream at sunset. One less-than-pleasant aspect of the summer is the increase in electricity consumption that comes with air conditioning.
For most American households, home cooling systems are the single largest user of electricity. On sweltering summer afternoons, you may be running your central A/C or ductless mini-splits for hours on end. This leaves many homeowners sweating over their energy bills and looking for ways to reduce A/C usage.
One way to lower your A/C costs is to look into multi–zone cooling. In this article, we’ll discuss what zoned cooling is and whether it’s a viable option for your home.
A multi-zone A/C system transforms your home into customized climate zones, each equipped with its own thermostat for personalized temperature control. Connecting multiple indoor units to a single outdoor unit ensures precise cooling, so you can leave unoccupied spaces warmer and save money on power consumption. Zoned cooling also allows everyone in the house to enjoy their ideal comfort level without impacting others.
The two most popular cooling options that Mirabito Energy Products installs are central A/C systems and ductless mini-splits.
Central A/C systems consist of two main components: an outdoor condenser unit and an indoor unit, typically housed in a basement, attic or utility space. The indoor unit has a blower fan that connects to your home’s ductwork. These systems work by extracting heat from your indoor spaces and circulating cooled air through ducts and vents. In most cases, the ductwork used for your home’s furnace can also accommodate the central A/C system. Controlled by a central thermostat, these systems provide seamless and efficient temperature regulation throughout your home.
Like central A/C systems, ductless mini-splits have both an outdoor and indoor unit. Refrigerant circulates through the system, absorbing heat and humidity from the indoor air before releasing the heat outside via thin tubing. Mini-splits require an indoor air handling unit in each room or zone needing air conditioning. These units come as wall-mounted, ceiling-mounted, floor-mounted, or in-ceiling, each of which connects to an outdoor unit.
Ductless A/C systems offer zoned cooling because each indoor air handler functions independently. You can set each unit to a different temperature and power some down entirely. This makes it extremely easy to cool different zones at varying levels and maximize your system’s efficiency.
It is also possible to add zones to a central A/C setup, but how viable it is depends on your cooling equipment. Variable speed systems are more conducive to zoning. Retrofitting ductwork and adding HVAC dampers may be necessary to create multiple cooling zones in a central A/C system. An HVAC professional like the techs at Mirabito can assist you in determining if multi-zone cooling is a good option for your household.
If you’re interested in upgrading your home’s A/C capabilities, reach out to Mirabito Energy Products for a free consultation and estimate. Our team serves households in New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Vermont and Massachusetts.
We know that when it comes to heating your home, the last thing you want is confusion around billing. At Mirabito, we use three types of documents to help you stay informed about your deliveries and account status: the Delivery Ticket, the Delivery Invoice, and your Statement. Each serves a different purpose, and while you may not receive all of these documents, we’re here to help you understand exactly what each one means when you do—and how to know what you need to pay.

You’ll often find this ticket left at your door after a fuel delivery. It’s called a Delivery Ticket (or Raven Invoice), and it’s not a bill—it’s strictly for your records.
What it tells you:
This information is especially helpful during the heating season so you can track usage and plan ahead. If you see a note like “143.6 gallons remaining,” that’s your heads-up that you’re nearing the limit of your contract.
Pro Tip: Keep these tickets handy to help monitor how much fuel you’ve used—and how much is left—throughout the season.

Similar to the delivery Ticket, your Delivery Invoice is another informational document—not a bill. However, it provides a little more detail.
What to look for:
The “OS” next to a fuel type (e.g., OS Propane) stands for Offset, which means the gallons delivered are part of your pre-purchased or budgeted amount. If you ever see the “OS” disappear from your invoice, it means you’ve gone beyond your agreement—and will be charged the standard rate for any excess gallons.

This is where it all comes together. Your Mirabito Statement shows your account balance and payment due. It may feel a bit overwhelming at first, especially for customers on a Budget Plan, but we’re here to break it down.
What you’ll see:
Focus on the BLUE box labeled “Total Payment Due” – this is the number you need to pay.
If you’re on a Budget Plan or Prepay Agreement, you might notice a “New Balance” line that looks higher or lower than expected. This is a running tally of credits and debits—not the amount you owe today. That balance becomes relevant only after May 31st (for prepay customers) or after July 10th (for budget customers) when the plan ends and we settle up your account.
| Document | What It’s For | What You Need to Do |
| Raven Invoice (Ticket) | Delivery confirmation & usage tracking | No action needed – for your records |
| Delivery Invoice | Delivery details & contract status | No action needed – review for accuracy |
| Statement | Your billing summary | Pay the amount in the BLUE “Total Payment Due” box |
Still have questions? Our customer service team is always here to help walk you through your documents. At Mirabito, we want to keep you warm, informed, and stress-free all season long. Give us a call to learn more – 800-934-9480, and visit your MyAccount Portal for a copy of your documents, make payments, and more.
