What’s the Story with Lafayette, NY?

After the Revolutionary War, the Military Tract of New York was established to compensate the men who fought for our country’s independence. This tract included land that would later become Lafayette. In the years that followed, Revolutionary veterans received up to 500 acres to settle.

Land purchased from the Onondaga tribe in 1817 officially became the town of Lafayette in 1825. (We celebrated our bicentennial in 2025!) Our name comes from the heroic French military leader General Lafayette, who was instrumental in defeating the British in the Revolutionary War.

Lafayette’s boundaries also include part of the Onondaga Reservation.
